Cassina

Italian Luxury Interior Design Furniture

Cassina, a furniture company founded in 1927 by Umberto and Cesare Cassina, began with the Cassina workshop which was created in 1935. As early as the early 1940s, the Cassina's remained faithful to their artisan heritage, focusing on the most minute of details and entrusting the design of their products to designers and architects including Franco Albini, who designed, among other things, the famous Ash Wood Coffee Table CICOGNINO, that you can find in our Cassina Coffee Tables collection.

The company’s calling became clear right after WWII when it was awarded a contract to supply furnishings for transatlantic ocean liners (Conte Grande, Africa, Giulio Cesare, and Andrea Doria) and fostered relations with designers including Gio Ponti, who created Armchair 593 as well as the famous Superleggera chair (1957), which Design Italy included in its dedicated selection of Cassina Dining Lounge Chairs on sale.

Respect, Protect, Create and Promote Design.

In the 1960s, the company launched the "I Maestri" collection, which recreated landmark pieces designed by leaders of the Modernist Movement. It also expanded its collaboration with avant-garde designers including Gaetano Pesce, Andrea Branzi, and Paolo Deganello. During the same period of time, various artists and designers worked with Cassina, including Vico Magistretti; Tobia Scarpa; Gianfranco Frattini; Mario Bellini, who designed upholstered modular units and the famous Cab leather chair (1977), which is still being produced to this day; and Joe Colombo, designer of the Additional System sofa (1967). In honor of all these great designers, on Design Italy we have created a special collection where you can find all of Cassina's sofas.

The company’s distinguishing feature is involving the most influential Italian and international designers in expanding its catalogue, with designers including Piero Lissoni,
Philippe Starck, Konstantin Grcic, and Toshiyuki Kita, the mind behind the iconic WINK armchair. Explore all of Cassina's armchairs for sale on Design Italy.

Patricia Urquiola is the brand’s art director and redesigned its historic Via Durini showroom in Milan.

A champion of Italian quality, Cassina also has a distinct marketing approach and involved famous fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld in shooting new photographs for the I Maestri collection.
