Gerrit Rietveld a créé le design du fauteuil Utrecht en 1935 alors qu'il travaillait pour le grand magasin Metz & Co. à Amsterdam, pour qui il devait réaliser une chaise pour la production en série.
Cette version n'a ni numérotation ni marque d'identification. Dans l'histoire du design, Rietveld a été l'un des premiers architectes à avoir conçu des meubles et des objets pour enfants, en observant les besoins de sa famille. Pour honorer son attention envers le monde de l'enfance, Cassina propose une nouvelle réinterprétation du modèle iconique daté de 1935 : il s'agit d'une nouvelle version, en tailles réduites pour être adaptée ergonomiquement aux enfants.
