International Women's Day

Influential Women Designers

Design Italy is proud to celebrate International Women's Day by offering a selection of iconic pieces designed by great women designers. We are excited to be a part of this global day of recognition of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all around the world.

Women Who Have Made Design History

French designer Charlotte Perriand is an icon of the early 20th century and stepped up to disprove the idea of the time that women shouldn't work in design firms. She went on to gain a name for herself by working with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanette. That partnership led to the design of the famous leather armchair LC2 Fauteuil Grand Confort Durable and chaise lounge LC4 in leather and cowhide versions produced by Cassina.

Cassina's armchair Tre Pezzi was designed in 1959 by Franca Helg, in collaboration with Franco Albini. The projects by Helg - one of the few women of her time to graduate - clearly show her talent. Cini Boeri shared the same talent and desire to deconstruct stereotypes surrounding women in the world of design and architecture: she created the innovative glass armchair Ghost.

The contemporary international design scene also includes designer Patricia Urquiola, whose projects embody innovation.

In celebrating women, we are also proud to recognize Gae Aulenti and Lella Vignelli, who influenced generations of architects and designers with designs like table lamp Pipistrello and necklace Senza Fine.

Women designers over history have often been obscured and ignored, yet they have forged on with passion and dedication to disprove prejudices and create truly iconic designs.
