Contemporary Italian Design
Among Design Italy’s wide offering of Italian design is a collection by historic Milanese company MDF Italia, which was founded by Bruno Fattorini in 1992 and produces designs for the home, office and public spaces. A key step for the company was its acquisition by the Cassina family – which brought Italian design to the world stage – in 2013.
Core values and continuous regeneration
At the heart of MDF Italia’s designs is the challenge of representing contemporary culture and meeting the needs of modern living. MDF Italia’s acquisition of the Acerbis International brand in 2019 reflects this mission. The company’s growth has allowed its business to expand into different market areas through international collaborations, all while maintaining its core values.
Forms and materials in design manufacturing
Simplicity, experimentation and technical innovation through materials are at the heart of each MDF project. MDF is one of the first companies to use Cristalplant®, a material that has the appearance of natural stone and cement spread on surfaces of tables. The products created through these experiments are shelf Mamba, designed by Victor Vasilev, table Rock by Jean Marie Massaud, and the famous NVL table by Jean Nouvel which interlocks without the use of screws.
Marco Cassina, the company’s marketing manager, expresses the values which MDF’s production is based on, including “innovation and breaking away from stereotypes and compositional schemes. A tangible example of this is the Random bookcase, one of our most iconic bestsellers”.
The company’s showroom in Mariano Comense, Milan, where the store’s displays interact with the showroom’s architecture, allows one to experience the company's business philosophy first-hand and where the company’s regeneration is evidenced by the project designed by architecture firm Pitsou Kedem.
Quality, functionality and aesthetics are combined in each product to offer customers an international taste of design. World-famous designers are part of the MDF Italia catalog with its up-to-date trends: iconic pieces by designers with long careers behind them blend with contemporary furnishings by younger designers, including Piergiorgio and Michele Cazzaniga, Eva Paster and Michael Geldmacher.
