In 1967, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Carlotta for the Cassina Young Play program, a collection of sophisticated minimalist pieces designed to deliver casual comfort to a younger clientele. For Carlotta, the architects employed only four frames and a complex system of joints and finger joints.
Their design simplicity highlights the skills of the Meda joinery in masterful wood craftsmanship, in this case, teak. The internal corners of the structure have the signature semi-circular cutouts that call to mind the intent of the original design to focus on optimizing the production process.
The hand-woven support cords crisscross the frame, thanks to a twist in the wood produced with CNC machines, demonstrating the innovative content Cassina invests in the project. Carlotta is perfect outdoor seating for casual comfort, thanks to its cushions padded with PET fiber.
